Top 10 Reasons You Should Attend Friday’s Communications Internship Fair (9/9, 2-5 p.m., Schine Upstairs)

10. There’s something for everyone!

Not looking for an internship yet? That’s fine! Take a walk around, pick up information for future reference, and grab a business card from folks at companies of particular interest.

Thinking about interning this fall or next spring? Jackpot! Meet reps from more than 40 companies and learn about internships in every corner of the communications industry.

9. Getting “face time” with company reps = A leg up on the competition.

Meeting someone face-to-face makes a much greater impact than a blindly-emailed résumé and cover letter. Being able to follow up with the person after the internship fair and then refer to that meeting in your cover letter will—Ta-da!—give you a reference to get your cover letter noticed.

8. It won’t conflict with your Friday night plans.

Since the fair runs from 2 to 5 p.m., you can stop in as your schedule allows (even leave and come back) and be done before dinner. There’s no registration before the event, either.

7. It will guarantee Syracuse Football a winning season!
Ok, ok… No guarantees but it can’t hurt, right? Tune into tonight’s season opener against Wake Forest on TWC channel 13 or ESPN3 at 8 p.m.

6. It’ll keep you competitive.
Most Newhouse undergrads cross the stage on graduation day with at least three internships under their belts. The Fair is a great place to start the process of getting one!

5. Your parents will be happy.

Informed parents are happy parents. This is a great lesson to learn early on! Plus, telling your parents about all the preparation you’re doing for your future (a.k.a. starting the process of landing an internship) may make them more apt to help with that SUpercard refill/electric bill/plane ticket/whathaveyou.

4. It’s all about the connections.
Anyone who will be job hunting in the next year (seniors and grad students: that’s you!) will benefit from making some connections within their industry, even if they don’t want to be in Syracuse after graduation (referrals are handy things…). Those of you not graduating will benefit from having a person to follow up with after the fair (see #9).

3. All the cool kids will be there.

Enough said.

2. Get the inside scoop.

Curious about what interns get to do in an internship? Wondering about the expected time commitment? Ask a company’s rep at the internship fair! Learn details about companies’ internships that you can’t find anywhere else.

1. Practice makes perfect! This won’t be the last career/internship/info fair this year, so get out there!

Convinced? Great! Here’s what you should do in the next week to prepare:

  • Do some background research on the attending companies so that you’ll be equipped to knock reps’ socks off.
  • Polish that résumé! Stop by the CDC for handouts on creating a great résumé and/or watch the Résumé & Letter Writing Seminar video.
  • While you’re at the CDC, grab the Internship Fair handouts, too.
  • Once your résumé is all set, print out multiple copies to bring with you.
