Interested in communicating with images? Our graphic design program allows you to do just that. You'll learn how to create visual communications for newspapers, magazines and multimedia presentations. Coursework emphasizes computer production techniques; you will also learn photography, communications writing and communications law and ethics.
To be admitted to Newhouse's graphic design program, you'll be asked to submit a portfolio of photos, graphics work and communications writing after completing three basic courses: Introduction to the Graphic Arts, News Writing and Principles of Photography. Graphic design majors also must pass a senior portfolio review. In total, you'll complete 36 hours of Newhouse classes.
For complete major requirements, see the Syracuse University Course Catalog.
You may choose to follow one of two professionally-oriented photography sequences: illustration photography or photojournalism. Illustration photography covers advertising, commercial, fashion and magazine illustration photography for print and the web. Photojournalism is designed for students interested in creating newspaper, magazine and multimedia journalism images. Both emphasize production techniques while also providing a foundation in graphic arts, communications writing and communications law and ethics.
In each sequence, you must submit a multimedia and print portfolio after completing six photography credits (GRA 217 and PHO 301), and a final portfolio is due at the end of your senior year.
For complete major requirements, see the Syracuse University Course Catalog.
