Magazine, Newspaper & Online Journalism

Our magazine, newspaper & online (MNO) journalism program immerses you in the professional world of writing well-crafted stories on deadline. Through media coursework and practical internships, you'll learn the art of narrative storytelling for print and the web. You'll also learn essential skills for today's digital newsgathering and reporting. You may focus on writing, reporting, design or editing as you prepare to work at newspapers, magazines, wire services and journalism web sites.

In addition to class work, many students complete internships at local media outlets, including The Post-Standard (Syracuse), The Utica Observer-Dispatch, the Syracuse New Times and Syracuse.com. On campus, students can write and create multimedia stories for The NewsHouse (www.thenewshouse.com), the school's web-based newsmagazine, which features student work produced for all media platforms in Newhouse's state-of-the-art Collaborative Media Room.

Magazine Newspaper & Online headlines
  • The magazine's name—Barcode—has a double meaning, but the singular focus of a team of 2011 magazine, newspaper and online journalism (MNO) students brought forth the school's first tablet-only magazine.

Barcode bills itself as "a gentleman's guide to the drinking lifestyle." The magazine's digital media director Kaitlin Santanna G'11 says the target readership is men 22-30 years old, which is the average age range of grad students. "It's a topic that most of the staff could relate to," she says.
