The Newhouse School is “The Home of Sports Communications”
We welcome master's candidates interested in a career in sports communications. That's why we offer the Newhouse
Sports Communications Emphasis (SCE).
Students in the
SCE complete the required coursework in their designated Newhouse master’s degree curriculum while taking additional required and elective classes in sports communications.
In addition,
SCE students get front row seats for major school events that focus on sports communications, such as Fall 2011's
The NFL: 1st and the Next 10, an in-depth look at the NFL’s future, hosted by Newhouse alum '88
Mike Tirico of ESPN.
2011-2012 is the
Sports Communications Emphasis's inaugural year, with graduate students from Broadcast & Digital Journalism, Magazine, Newspaper & Online Journalism and Television-Radio-Film participating. The school hopes to expand the
SCE next year to include students in other departments.
All
SCE graduate students enroll in the following:
- Contemporary Issues in Sports Media – topics include cross-media coverage of sports, conflicts of interest in sports media, and content/distribution conglomerates and their impact on what America watches.
- Sports Communications Entrepreneurship - topics include creating your own job, opportunities in independent production, sports fantasy leagues, online gaming, research and writing.
- Two required electives from a selection of sports communications or sport management courses, including Sports on TV, Radio Sports Broadcasting, and Live Sports Event Production.
- Capstone internship in the sports communications field.
Students may list the
Sports Communications Emphasis on their resumes and mention it in job interviews with the Newhouse School's backing.
SCE students also have a dedicated advisor who brings well-regarded professionals to campus such as Drew Esocoff,
NBC Sports director of the Super Bowl and Olympics; Joel Feld, one of the founders of College Sports TV, now the
CBS Sports Network; network production and programming executives; on-air talent like Stan Verrett, anchor,
ESPN Los Angeles; and Missy Motha, ESPN Coordinating Producer of
SportsCenter.
We expect
SCE grads will join the ranks of our prestigious sports communications alums – both undergrads and grads – in the years to come. Along with
Mike Tirico, Newhouse alums include
Dave Flemming, the voice of the San Francisco Giants,
Pete Thamel of the New York Times, and
Bob Matina, director, CBS Sports. And the list goes on and on.
If you’d like to express your interest in the
SCE, please notify our Newhouse Graduate Records Office (GRO) at
pcgrad@syr.edu. The Graduate Records Office will also be sending an inquiry to Magazine, Newspaper & Online, Broadcast & Digital Journalism and Television-Radio-Film applicants. Stay tuned!
