Graphic Design
Graphic designers are a crucial link in the communications model, solving design problems for clients through agencies specializing in design, advertising or public relations. Designers are also crucial in magazine and editorial design, and in web and multimedia design. Some designers cross media platforms by working independently as freelancers.
Graphic designers impact every form of visual communications from traditional print media such as newspapers, corporate communications, advertising and magazines, to multimedia messages in web design, social media and broadcast media.
Using the tools of design to craft compelling messages, graphic designers study typography, layout, color, movement, space, visual hierarchy and use of imagery to create beautifully crafted and visually literate designs using state-of-the-art computer software programs. Designers work collaboratively with other professionals on multi-platform design.
Students who major in graphic design will begin their coursework in a basic design class learning fundamentals and principles of design. This class, combined with a basic photography and multimedia class and an introductory news writing class, will form the nucleus of a undergraduate portfolio submitted to the department faculty to allow advanced design study. Intermediate and advanced classes will introduce multimedia platform, 3-D, animation and motion design. Design majors work to build their final, senior portfolio, submitted at the end of the senior year, from the skills learned in courses in advanced study.
Class work is supplemented by work in professional internships, workshops, collaborative projects with actual clients, through discussion with professionals and visiting speakers, and through work on independent, student-run campus media. Students enhance their design knowledge by learning marketing skills and how to work with clients to understand the role of audience, needs, benefits, deadlines and budgets.
